Minke van Schaik at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam – summer 2017

Minke_van_SchaikDuring the summer, I undertook an internship at the education department of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, specifically working on the development of tours for students. During my conversations with tour guides, museum staff members, schoolteachers and other interns, I learned a great deal about the museum and how it functions. It was great to be able to make small contributions to several projects, in addition to having my own research, which I had to conduct in a way that was different from my research at UCU, seen its practical application. This research involved writing a document to connect the content of the tours to the curriculum of high schools, specifically for the upcoming temporary exhibition I am a Native Foreigner.

One of the most inspiring experiences of my internship was when I was asked to step in as a tour guide, if only it was just for the start of the tour. Discussing the art with young children was inspiring, since it showed me how difficult, but also enriching it can be to introduce people to modern and contemporary art.
